Finding My Voice in the Harmony: A Week with Tameka Terrell

In this soul-filled Melanated Melodies entry, I reflect on the joy of singing background vocals for Tameka Terrell and discovering the power of counter harmony. It’s a story about music, growth, and showing up as your full self — plus, details on how to join us live at the Music Therapy Concert Series.

Joy. That’s the only word I can think of to describe this past week.

I had the absolute pleasure of working on background vocals for an upcoming show with the phenomenal Tameka Terrell — and whew, what an experience. From the very first note, I could feel something shift.

It wasn’t just about singing in harmony (which, yes, we did plenty of).
It was about learning — being stretched and celebrated in equal measure.

Let me tell you something: I thought I knew what harmony was.
But this week, I got introduced to counter harmony — and baby, it opened up a whole new section of my musical brain.
A counter harmony isn’t just about blending in — it’s about balancing something that already exists while adding your own distinct flavor.
You’re not fighting for space; you’re filling in what was missing.

And I don’t know, that just hit me deep.
Like… isn’t that what we do in community? In creativity? In life?
We show up as our full selves — not to overpower, but to contribute in a way only we can.

That’s what this whole rehearsal felt like: a celebration of showing up as myself.
No shrinking. No second-guessing.
Just singing, laughing, learning, being.

It reminded me why I do this in the first place.
Music is therapy.
It’s sacred.
And when we pour into it with people who honor the craft, it becomes something even bigger than art — it becomes a kind of healing.

If you want to experience the energy we’ve been building, you have to come to the show. It’s part of the Music Therapy Concert Series, Vol. 1 — and trust me, it’s not just a performance. It’s a full-on vibe, a safe space, and a soul refresh.
